The Boat – an update

leave a comment »

Well today is a good day. I have managed to get 99% of the boat coated in paper mache and dry. To be more specific. The shell of the boat is covered. There are still a billion other things that need doing on this project that I have to do and after a quick conversation with a few people I have chosen to go forward with the building of this boat into a mini sail boat.

Yes I know it will probably sink. Yes I know the sail mast will probably fall over or rip through the hull or mast stays and centerpiece. Yes I am aware that there are numerous difficulties in trying to create a paper boat, let alone a paper sailing boat.

I just don’t care about those difficulties. I have a lot of free time and desire to create this contraption so I shall do it. Thus I have started to cut out some smaller pieces and make incisions into the carefully papered layers (to reach the cardboard again) in order to set up the area needed for glue and more construction. On top of that I’ve started to make the leeboard (5 layers thick cardboard).

There is one thing I have not anticipated: I am running out of materials! When I started this project I had a lot of cardboard and paper and glue and well…everything. I thought that I’d use about half the material that I have currently used to complete everything and have enough left over to do two other projects. I was off by a wide margin.

Paper Mache hint: you can never have enough cardboard, paper, glue, flour or time on your hands for any project!

Hopes and Dreams

leave a comment »

I wrote this title as an inspiration towards writing a more detailed account of my hopes and dreams. Sadly as I think back to many of my dreams, I see too many unfulfilled check boxes next to the list. Am I the only one who regrets missing out on something they didn’t do? Hardly. I am; however, the one who has to live with the consequences of doing or not doing something I wanted to do or should have completed.

So the question begs to be asked to you all, for your own sakes, what have you forgotten to do that you always wanted to do? What have you passed up as a goal? Think about it alone for a few minutes today. A project? A place? A different career?? Another trophy or contest? Maybe creativity was stifled for too long. Write down a note of  what you forgot you wanted to do yet still want to do. Keep that note with you and double your efforts at doing it.

Do not become one like myself, who will sit idly by and watch his dreams disappear with the dawning of each new day. Get them done.

Which reminds me… time to write my own list and make my own notes.

here to there1

I just realized that I have not gone for a nice long bike ride through the park in a long long time (you can tell it is long by the use of the word twice)! Sometime in the next few weeks I need to schedule myself a nice morning ride with the video camera strapped up to record what I see so that I may share it with you, my readers.

Not that I am in great shape or even good shape. I just want to share with you all the experience of riding at 5am in the park, with barely a human awake, occasionally hearing the animals and crickets, the sound of the river water unblemished by the traffic of the city, all while passing through the fog of a dewy summer morning.

Had the road not been paved I could swear you’d be confused and think you were on an old native trail in the jungle, lost to the world of civilization forever! There are too few wild places left to see, too few realms undisturbed by humanity that it sickens me to think what my future children and grandchildren will inherit and lack in their daily lives. Will it be a world of wonder or a world devoid of the natural? Plastic or Organic? The boxy and restricted lives we lead were never meant to be our way. We are nomads genetically.. we are nomads spiritually. It is why we have pictures of other places we’ve been to, or like to be at. It is why we leave when we go on vacation. It is why we daydream of doing other things. Riding a bike reminds me that people once travelled more as a necessity. Their life was movement and their mental problems few.

Yes, I must take another ride, quiet and serene; it will do me a solid via reenergizing my soul and awaken my senses once more!

My Mother’s and Aunt’s Bday

leave a comment »

So this week has us celebrating my mother’s and my aunt’s birthdays. To which we’ve had ice cream cake (well not really, watermelon sherbet from Friendly’s), some nice dinners, a few drinks and laughs, some trips to various locations for purchasing things (like imports and whatnots) and entertaining times watching British humor.

All in all I’d say both ladies were happy and contented with their times of celebration. It is a pity that most people are only celebrated only once a year on their birthdays when they create so much joy for those around them. Never forget to give someone you care about a hug or sign of appreciation. Not for anything in particular… just because you care about them: you never know how much a small gesture of affection means to people!

New Drink Idea – Kailey’s

with one comment

So I was bored after walking the dog and decided to mix up two liquors that I had laying around. Granted I am sure that I am far from original on this one, but I mixed it and it came out delicious and visually pleasing.

Introducing: Kailey’s – Bailey’s Irish Creme and Kahlua!

Cat approved!

Short on Money.. Overflowing with Water

leave a comment »

So today I needed to take another trip to center city. While I was there I noticed one of the pictures I took the last time that didn’t quite make the camera. So I took it again and have uploaded it for you.

This is the water fountain at city hall. Notice that Philadelphia is in a major budget slump and that the city is pretty freakin hot right now. Also notice that we’re spending money and precious water (which at this stage of heat… we’ll be short on potable water come August) on a fountain. Call me old fashioned but as much as I like the idea of the fountains running, I prefer the concept of a low tax, in budget, and rational civic environment to the current wasteful and self absorbed ‘representation’ that we have now.

Notice in the photo that the person in front of the falls is a city worker. I was in and out of buildings all day near city hall. This person was still in the same area the entire time. Mind you she is not security. She is not a tour guide and she certainly wasn’t working. She has as much value as that hobo which is asleep on the left side the water display.

All the small things…

Today I was impressed by the natural world and I wanted to share it with you.

You see I was starting to water my garden when out popped a most impressive predator of the insect world. The part that impressed me was not that it was a predator, but that in the form that I found it there was only one thing it had to be until it reached adulthood: prey.

My finger is show to scale in the picture below:

That dear readers, is  a baby praying mantis walking on my front steps!
